Visiting Benghazi
Benghazi is the second largest city in Libya. It sits near the Jebel Akhdar region and numerous archaeological sites. While Benghazi may lack some of the Old World charm of other Libyan cities, the town makes up for it in natural beauty and awe-striking scenery. Benghazi History The city of Benghazi is located in northeast Libya and has been in existence since approximately 300 BC. Originally known as Barneek, named after a Greek princess, the name changed to Benghazi in 1450 after a man named Ghazi who did many good works for the citizens during his lifetime. The city was invaded by the Italians in 1911, who ruled over the area until 1942 when they were defeated by the Allied Forces and the Libyan army. It officially became part of Libya when independence was granted in 1951. Today, the city serves as the capital of Eastern Libya. It is Libya’s chief supplier of agricultural products, and Benghazi is home to one of the world’s largest desalinization plants, providing fresh water to the surrounding area. Wandering Around the City Benghazi is a city easily discovered by walking. On Friday mornings, the central squares of the city bustle when the market places open. The main market is Souq al-Jreed on Sharia Omar al-Mukhtar. This market specializes in clothing and household goods. Around the city, visitors will find many parks and lakes. The beaches are lovely and a popular destination for visitors and locals, alike. There is also a zoo. Outside the City Visitors who come to Benghazi will want to take the time to head out of the city to visit the surrounding countryside. Along the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea are some of Libya’s best Roman archaeological sites. Visitors will be able to wander around the ruins while enjoying the breathtaking beauty of the coast. The nearby Jebel Akhdar region is an excellent destination for anyone who enjoys hiking. It is one of the few green and lush areas in all of Libya. However, there have been some security issues in the Jebel Akhdar with local tribes, so the areas in which to hike may be limited. contact@discoverlibyatravel.com |
