Desert safaris have become a top tourist attraction in Libya. One reason for this is due to the fact that anyone visiting the country must do so as part of a tour group, and the desert safari is one of the tour destinations.

Usually when one thinks of safaris, the idea of traveling through thick jungles and open plains with lions, tigers, and elephants comes to mind. Consequently, the image of a desert safari involves driving across sand dunes. However, the desert is home to a large variety of wild life. In fact, Libya is a haven for bird watchers.

Treks to the Desert

Desert safaris take place in several different ways. Tourists can either take off in a Jeep or they can trek with camels. The treks can be a day trip or several days with overnight stays on the desert, sleeping in tents.

Because most of Libya is desert, getting there is not difficult. In fact, it would be virtually impossible to come to Libya and not visit the desert. The opportunity to see these beautiful sand dunes and experience life here should not be missed.

Idehan Ubari

Ideahan Ubari is perhaps the top destination for a desert safari. It is popularly known as Ubari Sand Sea. The land ripples with waves of sand, and it is not unusual for an afternoon wind to whip films of sand across the roads. In the midst of the sand sea is a true miracle: the Dawada Lakes. Hundreds of miles from an ocean and without any river or flowing body of water nearby, the Dawada Lakes appear seemingly out of nowhere. There are eleven lakes, all of them with a salt water content that rivals the Dead Sea.

Solar Eclipse

The Sahara Desert in Libya is a prime location for viewing eclipses, both solar and lunar, as long as the eclipse can be viewed from that part of the world, of course. The desert lands make the sky seem bigger and more wide open. The air is pristine and clear. Special desert safaris are set up for these eclipses, which include the materials needed to view the eclipse as well as an astronomer to explain the phenomenon.
